Drugs Are Bad, Mmmkay!

This post had me thinking about the future and when I have kids. I'm pretty sure drugs are not going to go away anytime soon so I know when I have kids they will probably be exposed to them. Of course I would rather them not use drugs at all. If they do decide to "experiment", I would want them to be honest with me...

I feel that when I went through elementary and middle school, I was taught that drugs were unhealthy and bad for you. I went through the DARE program but I honestly don't remember being super impacted by it. I guess I mostly learned through movies, television, and music.  Then again, I would still hear classmates talking about how they smoke weed and whatnot. I steered away from those groups of kids. I knew that obviously schools weren't doing much with educating their students. I think that parents need to be there the most for their children. Trust is a big part of it.

A method that I would use to teach my future children about drugs would be to show them the negative effects of what drugs can do to you. Whether it be through movies or pictures. I don't want to scare them in any way. I want to be truthful with them. They change your body and alter your state of mind. I want them to grow up healthy, live long, and achieve their goals. One bad choice that they make could change their life.

I absolutely am not thinking of having kids anytime soon. But like I said in the beginning, it had me thinking about the topic of drugs and my future children.

  1. Hey wait! You are sure by the time you have kids they will be expose to them? Haha, but yes I agree Im sure they drugs wont be going away any time soon, or ever really/ as a parent all you could is give them that talk about drugs and hope they dont start "using." I too remember the DARE program and it never really made much of an inpact on me or anyone I knew growing up.

  2. It's definitely tough to keep your kids off of drugs. Mostly because weed and a few others are so widely used. But keep a close connection with your kids and it should help keep you clued in on what they do.

  4. I remember going through the DARE program! And MADD too.

You're so right though, one bad choice could change your life. It's important to have the communication and open education that we did with your children. I always wonder though if there is a fine line between education and over educating to the point of interest. I suppose with your balance of communication and education you'll be a great mother!

  5. Agreed.

Also agreed on the whole, kids thing can wait.

I remember being in dare in elementary school. I think i was more excited that the cop gave me a free T-shit and pencil than anything else. I can recall sitting in class through all the rambling, waiting patiently for my gift. ha ha...

That's the thick of it though, we expect the system to take care of our children as we might want to but unless we make an effort it can probably be assumed they not getting the proper attention.
